Broken screen prank ideas

Fifteen tried-and-tested ways to fake a cracked screen, how to make each one convincing, and how to reveal it so everyone ends up laughing.

A broken screen prank is simple: a device that looks smashed, a moment of panic, and a reveal. What separates a great one from a flop is the set-up. Every idea below uses the free broken screen prank, which can crack the screen the moment someone touches it, play a glass-shatter sound and draw the cracks over a screenshot of the victim's own screen.

Phone prank ideas

1. “Can you look at this photo?”

Load a screenshot of your own home screen, choose Corner drop, set it to break on touch and start the prank. Hand your phone over and ask them to swipe to the next photo. The glass cracks under their thumb, with a buzz and the sound of breaking glass. Nothing beats the look on their face.

2. The sofa drop

Arm the prank with Already broken when it opens, let your phone slide off your lap onto a cushion, pick it up, look horrified, and turn the screen around. Soft landings mean no real risk — please do not drop it on a hard floor for authenticity.

3. The borrowed phone

When someone lends you their phone, take a quick screenshot of their lock screen, use it as the background, and give it back with the prank armed. The first tap they make breaks “their” screen. Reveal immediately.

4. The slow burn wallpaper

Set a Hairline crack as your lock screen from the cracked screen wallpaper page, sized for your exact phone. Say nothing. See how long it takes someone to notice and ask what happened.

5. The tablet in the kitchen

Kids' tablet or recipe iPad propped up in the kitchen? Add the page to the Home Screen so it opens edge to edge, set a 30-second timer and walk away. Best done with a parent's permission, never on a child who will be genuinely upset.

Laptop and computer prank ideas

6. The unlocked laptop

The classic. Screenshot their desktop, choose LCD bleed, set When the mouse moves and start the prank. When they return and nudge the trackpad, the screen bleeds ink and shatters. The broken laptop screen prank page lists the screenshot shortcuts for every system.

7. Keyboard chaos

After the first crack, every key press adds another impact. A victim who frantically presses Escape, Ctrl and the power button — well, Escape exits, but everything before it makes the damage worse. Keep the reveal close.

8. The meeting room screen

Open the prank on the laptop driving a meeting room TV or projector, pick Destroyed, and set a 5-minute timer before people arrive. It works best with colleagues you know will laugh, and never right before an important presentation.

9. The second monitor

Drag a browser window onto someone's second monitor, start the prank with Shattered and a black background. A dark, cracked monitor looks just like a panel that died overnight.

10. The gaming setup

Big 4K or ultrawide monitors make the effect even more dramatic, because the cracks are drawn at native resolution. Pick Spider web, put the impact right in the middle with a tap, and wait for the next “who threw the controller?”

Bigger set-ups

11. The fake dropped TV

Smart TVs and streaming sticks with a browser can open the prank. Choose Corner drop on a black background. Keep this one strictly to people you live with, and never send TV crack pictures to a landlord, shop or insurer — that stops being a joke.

12. Video reaction

Set up a camera before you hand over the device and capture the reaction. Ask permission before you post it anywhere.

13. Content-only prank

No victim needed: record a short clip of a screen “breaking” using the green screen video export on the cracked screen overlay page and edit it into a fake “I dropped my phone” video.

14. April Fools' Day

Arm every device in the house with a different timer on the morning of 1 April. Short timers work best — 10 to 30 seconds — because people put devices down and forget about them.

15. The double bluff

Show a friend this prank in advance. A week later, start it on their phone with a screenshot of their real lock screen. Even people who know the prank exists fall for it when it is their own wallpaper.

How to make a fake broken screen convincing

  • Use their real screen. A screenshot of the victim's home screen or desktop behind the cracks is the single biggest upgrade.
  • Let them cause it. A crack that appears under their own finger is far more believable than a screen that is already broken.
  • Sound on, brightness up. The glass-shatter sound sells the moment. On iPhone, flip the silent switch to ring.
  • Match the damage to the device. Phones break at corners and edges; laptops tend to show LCD bleed and lines.
  • Hide the tells. Keep the cursor hidden, keep the screen awake, and add the page to the Home Screen on iPhone so there is no address bar.
  • Do not overdo it. One or two impacts look more real than a screen covered in cracks — unless you are going for Destroyed.

The reveal

A good prank ends with the victim laughing, not shaking. Reveal it within a few seconds: press Esc, or press and hold the screen and tap Exit prank, and show them the untouched device. Saying “it's a website” and letting them try it on you is the fastest way to turn the panic into a grin. If someone is truly upset, apologise and leave it there.

When not to do a broken screen prank

  • With anyone who would be genuinely distressed — people who are anxious, unwell, or have recently paid for a repair.
  • On devices that belong to an employer, school or shop, or right before an important call, exam or presentation.
  • To get out of work, a deadline or a payment, or to support any insurance, warranty or repair claim. Using fake damage that way is fraud.
  • On someone else's device without being there to reveal it.
  • Anywhere a sudden shock could be dangerous, such as on a phone someone is using while driving or cycling.

Done kindly, the broken screen prank is one of the most harmless tech pranks there is: no software, no lasting change, and an instant reveal. Have fun with it.
